What to wear for outside family photos

9 Tips for Stylish and Coordinated Outfits

Learn how to choose the perfect color palette, avoid common style mistakes, and create timeless family portraits with these essential wardrobe tips.

What to wear in for yout outside photos is slightly different than dressing for a studio session.

When preparing for outdoor family photos, selecting the right outfits can make all the difference. Here are nine essential tips to ensure your family looks cohesive, stylish, and camera-ready:

In this example I chose the toddler little girl dress first, then chose the rest based on my 9 tips!

  1. Choose a Color Palette:

    1. start with one outfit, the person that’s the hardest to dress

    2. choose the one pattern outfit and draw your colors from there. For example I chose the below pattern, then based on that ONE piece, I used the colors and ones that would compliment it

  2. Avoid "Matchy Matchy": Skip identical outfits like all-white shirts and jeans, which can make portraits look flat.

  3. Limit Patterns: Use one pattern as a focal point and keep others subtle to avoid distraction.

  4. Incorporate Texture and Layers: Different fabrics and layers add depth without overwhelming the image.

  5. Use Accessories Wisely: A well-chosen accessory can tie the outfits together and add personality.

  6. Avoid All White and Black: These tones can detract from the image. Opt for off-whites or greys instead.

  7. Embrace Color: Don’t shy away from color, but avoid neon shades. Subtle pops, like mustard yellow, are perfect.

  8. Mind Your Footwear: Shoes should complement the outfit, not detract from it.

  9. Focus on Fit: Clothes should fit well—not too tight or too baggy—for the most flattering results.
