How I got started in newborn photography
Hi friends,
It’s been a while since I introduced myself! I’m Julia of Julia Christina Photography.
How I found photography:
I've always been artistic and wanted to go to art school, but my parents encouraged me to get a practical degree first. So, I earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Victoria and worked in HR for several years. After getting married and having two kids, I explored jewelry making but wanted a more social creative outlet. I admired great photography but thought I’d never understand lighting—until my husband encouraged me to take a course. I started in Victoria, and when we moved to Alameda for his job, I pursued a Master’s in Photography from the Academy of Art University while we applied for our green cards, and added to our family with our third child.
Why we chose the Seattle area:
About three years ago, we moved to the Seattle area to be closer to my parents in Victoria, BC (both my husband and I are originally from here!). After six years of dealing with bad air quality from forest fires, it felt like the right time for a change.
We searched for a home with access to great schools and enough space for my studio—and luckily, we found the perfect spot! Recently, I also started renting a studio in downtown Seattle to make it even more convenient for my clients to work with me.
What I photograph:
I’ve always loved photographing people’s portraits. I began with family photography, during the golden hour in the Bay Area’s great weather. I also tried in-home newborn sessions but wasn’t getting the results I envisioned. I found a mentor, who was a friend of my sister-in-law’s, and trained one-on-one with her. With her help, I set up a home studio for newborn photos and found my passion for posed newborn photography.
Why I love it:
I’ve always loved children! I was the go-to babysitter as a teen and am the oldest of three. I’m naturally drawn to babies and kids, and if you’ve seen me at a session, you know how excited I get meeting a newborn. Their tiny, perfect features always amaze me.
Clients I love to work with:
I love working with families as they grow—starting with maternity sessions, followed by newborn, milestone, and family photos. Watching my clients’ families evolve over the years is a true joy.
I aim to make things easy for you, from providing outfits for the session to handling location and timing details. Plus, I offer professional printing options so your investment in photography is beautifully showcased for years to come.
Thanks for being here!
