What to Wear for Your Partner in an Outdoor Maternity Session

When it comes to outdoor maternity sessions, what your partner (and children, if included) wear is just as important as your own outfit. Coordinating—not matching—is the key to creating timeless, beautiful portraits.

Start with Mom

The expecting mom sets the tone. Once you’ve chosen your dress or outfit, use that as the base to guide your partner and children’s clothing choices.

Choose a Color Palette

Stick to the same color palette expecting mom is wearing, in similar tones. For example, if you’re wearing light pink, you might choose ivory, beige, or soft grey for your partner. The goal is harmony, not identical outfits.

Keep It Simple

Solid colors photograph beautifully outdoors. Add interest through texture (like lace or layered fabrics), but avoid busy patterns such as florals, stripes, or polka dots. These can distract from the connection and emotion in the photos.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Think “family palette” rather than “uniform.” If your colors are ivory, beige, and blush pink, mix and match those tones across outfits instead of everyone wearing the same white shirt.

By coordinating thoughtfully, your images will feel natural, cohesive, and timeless—allowing your family’s connection and love to shine through.
