Lifestyle vs. Posed Newborn Photography: What's the Difference?
Newborn photography is a wonderful way to capture the first precious moments of your baby's life. When choosing a style for your newborn photos, you might come across two main types: “lifestyle” and posed photography.
I am a posed newborn photographer. I do not go to people’s homes. I photograph in one of my two studio’s in Redmond or Seattle. Ensure you choose your photographer for the style they show in their portfolio. Here is an example of a posed newborn session with a family with 4 siblings and a 9 day old newborn baby.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand the differences.
Lifestyle Newborn Photography
Natural Setting:
Photos are usually taken at home environment.
Emphasizes everyday moments and family interactions. Backgrounds will be your home.
Candid Shots:
Focuses on capturing natural, unposed moments.
Shows the baby in their real surroundings, often with parents and siblings.
Documentary:
Aims to document your newborn in your home and with your family.
Posed Newborn Photography

Uses props, blankets, and simple backdrops for a stylized look.
Carefully Arranged:
Baby is gently posed in specific positions.
I uses techniques to ensure the baby’s safety and comfort, including a very warm studio.
Artistic Style:
Focuses on creating artistic and visually appealing images.
Includes props like baskets, hats, and headbands for a whimsical feel.
Attention to Detail:
Every element, from lighting to positioning, is meticulously planned.
Requires more time and patience, often taking several hours.
My full newborn sessions are 3 hours.
