Preparing Your Toddler for Photos with the New Baby
Welcoming a new baby into the family is an exciting time, but it can also be a significant adjustment for your toddler. Photos of your two babies are so very precious. There are some easy tips to help me capture them.
The KEY is being flexible and understanding with your toddler.
Here are some tips to preparing for the session I suggest:
Talk About the New Baby:
Discuss the upcoming photo session and explain that the new baby will be part of the pictures.
Share your excitement and make it sound like a fun activity.
Involve Your Toddler in Planning:
Let your toddler choose their outfit or help pick out clothes for the baby.
give them two outfits choices that you like.
Show them examples of family photos and explain what will happen.
Practice Posing Together:
Practice some simple poses at home. This can help your toddler feel more comfortable and understand what to expect.
Practice lying down next to each other, with their arm around baby.
Make it a game by pretending to be a photographer and taking practice shots.
Schedule Photos at the Right Time:
Choose a time when your toddler is usually well-rested and in a good mood.
Avoid scheduling during nap times or when they might be hungry.
Typically toddlers are best in the mornings, so we start with family and sibling photos FIRST.
Keep the Session Short and Sweet:
Toddlers have short attention spans. I plan for my top poses (family, and with the new baby). If your toddler is being agreeable I continue with other poses such as kids and dad, and mom and kids etc.
Plan for breaks and bring snacks and favorite toys to keep them entertained.
Offer Positive Reinforcement:
Praise your toddler for their cooperation and participation.
Use rewards, like a small treat or a favorite activity, to encourage good behavior.
Bring their favorites snacks
Load their favorite music or show on your phone prior to arrival
Stay Relaxed and Patient:
Your toddler can pick up on your emotions, so staying calm and positive will help them feel at ease.
Be flexible and go with the flow if things don't go exactly as planned.
Your toddler will feed of your energy. If you are frustrated with them, or tell them they are behaving badly, this will only reinforce poor behavior.
Involve Them in Baby Care:
Encourage your toddler to hold the baby (with assistance) or interact gently during the photo session.
Highlight their role as an older sibling and how important they are in the family.
Be accommodating with what your toddler is comfortable with. This may mean you or your partner are in the photo too.
By following these tips, you can help your toddler feel more comfortable and engaged during photo sessions with the new baby, resulting in beautiful, cherished memories for your family.
