3 Steps to a Relaxed Family Photoshoot
Plus a few bonus tips for making it stress-free!
I’ve learned over the years that the best family photos come from real connection, not perfect posing. If the idea of matching outfits, wrangling kids, and smiling on cue feels overwhelming—take a breath. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Here are 3 simple steps (plus a few extras!) to help make your next family photo session feel fun, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable:
1. Prep Light, Not Perfect
Outfits don’t need to be flawless to look great on camera. Go for neutrals and soft tones, and maybe one outfit with a subtle pattern to add texture. What matters most is that everyone feels comfortable and confident. Need help choosing? I’ve got a full post on outfit tips [HERE]—and I’m always happy to help if you’re unsure!
2. Let the Kids Be Kids
Wiggles, snack breaks, and even the occasional meltdown? All part of the story. Some of the most beautiful moments happen when kids are just being themselves. I’ll guide the session gently, but leave lots of space for play, silliness, and real connection.
3. Trust the Process
Whether it’s a full session or a quick fall mini, I’ve got you. From helping you choose the right time and location to giving natural posing cues, I’ll make sure it never feels awkward. Just show up, be yourselves, and enjoy your family. And remember—kids read your energy. If you're relaxed, they’ll feel it too.
Bonus Tips to Keep Things Easy
🧺 Pack the Essentials:
Bring a few favorite snacks or small treats (we’ll only use them if we need to!). A comfort item for younger kids can also help.
😷 Healthy Participants Only:
If someone’s not feeling well, let’s reschedule. It’s tough to feel joyful when you’re sick—and we definitely don’t want to pass around any germs.
🕕 Worried About Late Start Times?
If golden hour feels too late for your little one’s bedtime, consider booking a studio session instead. We can create a calm, cozy setup that works better for your family’s rhythm.
