Cold Weather Photography: Tips for Beautiful Outdoor Photos in the Winter Months.

Planning an Outdoor Photoshoot in Cold Weather? Here’s What to Expect!

Thinking about an outdoor session, family or maternity session, during the colder months? It’s totally possible to create beautiful, memorable photos in the winter, and I’m here to help you make it work! After plenty of chilly-day shoots, I’ve learned a few tricks to keep everyone comfortable while capturing stunning images. Here’s what to know before you book.

Dress the Part

Layers, layers, layers! Start with a good base—think long johns or undershirts—then layer on a cozy shirt and sweater.

For family sessions, I recommend neutral tones or rich, warm colors like burgundy, mustard, or navy, which look amazing against winter backdrops. Add scarves, stylish coats, and hats, and you’re ready to go!

For expecting moms, some gowns can be thin, so be prepared to brave the cold without a coat for a few shots. If you’re someone who really doesn’t like being cold, this might not be the best session for you.

2. Consider Who’s Included

If it’s just you and your partner (and you’re both excited about being outside), we can absolutely go for it! But if you’ve got little ones under two, I’ll recommend staying indoors if it’s colder than 45°F (7°C). For older kids, we can chat about how to layer and make it work.

3. Have a Backup Plan

Winter weather can be unpredictable, so I always suggest having a backup plan. If conditions are too harsh—whether it’s rain, snow, or high winds—we can move the session to my cozy studio. I’m also happy to reschedule once if needed. After that, we’ll default to an indoor session if the weather’s just too much.

Embrace the Season

There’s something so magical about winter sessions. The bare trees, soft light, and maybe even a dusting of snow make for stunning photos that will help you remember the season you were in, whether you’re celebrating a pregnancy or capturing your family. Being able to shoot mid day because the sun goes down so early!

When to Consider a Different Type of Session

If the cold sounds like too much—especially with a baby —I’d suggest an indoor session instead. You’ll need to be ready to brave the chill, so if you’re not up for 20 minutes outdoors without a coat, this might not be the session for you. But if you’re willing to bundle up, I’m ready to capture some beautiful, cozy moments! Just keep in mind that this is your choice, and I’ll be happy to adjust plans if you decide it’s too cold.

If you’re excited about a winter session and want to make the most of the chilly season, I’d love to chat more about how we can make it work for you. Let’s create something special together, no matter what the weather brings!
