Is Flash Photography Safe for Newborns?
Is Flash Photography Safe for Newborns? Here’s What You Need to Know:
I know you’re probably wondering if flash photography is safe for your baby during a newborn session. It’s such a common concern, but trust me, it’s totally safe. Let me walk you through why there’s no need to worry.
Why Flash Photography Won’t Harm Your Baby
I get it—flash can seem like a lot, but the truth is, modern flashes are designed to be gentle.
According to BabyMed and ophthalmologist Dr. Levenson flash and strobe photography are not harmful to babies' eyes.
The light from a flash is no brighter than daylight, and short bursts like these pose no risk to your baby’s vision.
I Use Soft, Diffused Light
In my sessions, I always use soft, diffused light, my umbrella is 5 feet! It’s not like those blinding flashes you might imagine. With softboxes, umbrellas and light diffusers, the light is spread out evenly so it’s easy on your baby’s eyes. Your little one won’t even notice the flash most of the time!
My umbrella I use is 5 feet (that is large!), and my light bounces first off the inside of the umbrella, then onto the subject.
Carefully Controlled Flash Settings
As a photographer, I control the flash settings to make sure the light is just enough for a beautiful photo without being too bright. It’s all very calculated. Your baby’s safety is always top of mind, and I make sure everything is set up so they’re as comfortable as possible.
I shoot on a the smallest depth of field as i can. So alrady I have a lot of light entering my camera, I don’t need a lot of power. My flash settings are either at their loweest or 50%, never higher.
Newborns Are Naturally Protected
Babies actually have a built-in protection system! Their reflex is to close their eyes when they sense a change in light. Plus, most newborns are peacefully sleeping during the shoot, so they probably won’t even react to the flash.
IN CONCLUSION: Flash Photography is Safe
When done by someone who knows what they’re doing, like a professional photographer, flash photography is completely safe for your baby. So, you can relax and enjoy the session knowing your little one is in good hands (baby med).
