How to Prepare Your Home for a Minimalist In-Home Newborn Session

Welcoming a newborn into your family is a magical time, and capturing those early moments with a minimalist in-home newborn session is a beautiful way to preserve those memories. Unlike traditional studio sessions, an in-home newborn session allows you to stay at home and me bring everything to you. Preparing your home for the session is key to achieving stunning, timeless images. Here’s how to get everything set up for a seamless and stress-free experience.

1. Find the Perfect Space for the Setup

A successful newborn session requires adequate space to accommodate both the baby and photography equipment. Ideally, you’ll need:

  • A 5-foot by 3-foot area for my lighting setup, which includes a light and umbrella.

  • A 4-foot by 3-foot space for the small bed where your baby will be photographed.

Look for a space with good natural light—near a large window or sliding glass door is ideal. If natural light is limited, don’t worry! My lighting setup ensures we can achieve that soft, airy look regardless of the weather or lighting conditions in your home.

2. Select a Wall for Family Portraits

For those sweet family shots, I’ll need a blank wall free from any wall hangings, artwork, or decorations. A clean, neutral-colored wall (white, light gray, or soft beige) works best to keep the focus on your family and eliminate distractions. If you’re unsure which wall to choose, I can help you decide when I arrive!

3. Warm Up the Space

Newborns are most comfortable when they’re warm, so it’s important to heat the room to at least 75 degrees an hour before the session. Babies are often photographed in minimal clothing or wraps, and a cozy temperature helps keep them calm and sleepy throughout the session. I will bring my space heater, that can also be helpful to maintain warmth in smaller areas.

4. Dress in Soft, Neutral Colors

To keep the focus on the love and connection within your family, I recommend wearing neutral, soft tones like whites, creams, light grays, or pastels. Avoid any patterns, logos, or overly bright colors, as they can take attention away from your baby and the emotions captured in the session. I have clothes in my prop closet I would be happy to bring for you, just ensure to let me know your sizes a week ahead of time so I can plan accordingly please.

5. Keep Essentials Close

Having a few essentials nearby will help keep the session running smoothly:
✔ Extra diapers and wipes
✔ A pacifier (even if you aren’t using one it’s helpful to have on hand)
✔ A small bottle of milk or a nursing-friendly space for quick feedings

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

The beauty of an in-home newborn session is that it’s at home.

If this is too much and you want to be pampered and everything done for you - I suggest you book my studio session instead.

Let me know if you'd like any tweaks or additional details! 😊
