Reasons why I do NOT give my clients raw or unedited images.

Do you give or sell your Seattle area clients raw or unedited images?

I do not. Never. And I don’t ever plan to.

WHY? Well there are many reasons, here are a few:

A raw image, isn’t the finished product.

A raw image is almost like ingredients to a chef, or raw materials for a painter. It’s not done yet. The final image changes a lot based on post processing and editing. For example, I have a specific way I see colors, that another photographer does not. You are choosing me for my style, including my post processing and editing.

Maintaining my reputation.

If I were to give you the raw or unedited images, I am giving you control over how my work in represented and perceived. You could change my work in a negative way which could harm my reputation and brand.

Editing plays a role in creating my style of photography.

Post processing plays a big role in the final outcome. Editing takes far longer than the actual session. By maintaining control over this part of the process, I also ensure my vision for the image is preserved.

Some of my fellow photographers and I did a test a long time ago, we each edited an images that each other captured. The results were wildly different styles.

When you look at my portfolio you see consistency, clients come to me for this consistency. It’s important I maintain this.

Intellectual property rights.

Raw files contain a lot of information, including metadata. Selling these could undermine my intellectual property rights.

Making a living wage.

Photography is not just about a good camera and clicking a button. I have put many years of training and experience into my work. Not to mention the relationships I prefer to foster with my clients.  Selling or giving away raw images would undermine the value of my expertise and effort.

IN SUMMARY:

Not selling raw or unedited images is a conscience choice made by most professional photographers to protect their artistry, reputation and livelihood.
