What to Wear: Undergarments and Shoes for Your Maternity Session

The shoes this little boy are wearing were perfect!

Preparing for your maternity session is all about feeling comfortable and beautiful while creating timeless photos. Here are some tips for undergarments and shoes to help you look and feel your best:

Bra and Underwear Tips

Bra: A skin-tone bra with a sweetheart, V-neckline, or strapless with a v front style works best. These designs stay hidden under most maternity dresses, especially those with low or intricate necklines. Avoid bras with straight-across designs or visible straps—they may show in photos, and editing them out is not always possible.

Underwear: For fitted dresses seamless underwear is essential. They provide a smooth look, keeping the focus on your beautiful silhouette without visible lines. If you are comfortable for fitted dresses I actually recommend no underwear.

Editing out lines is not always possible so please wear appropriate undergarments.

Shoes - for outdoor session

For mom: Choose comfortable flats that are easy to walk in, especially if your session is outdoors. Heels are not recommended—they tend to sink into grass or soft ground, making movement difficult.

For partner and siblings: shoes will be visible, no tennis shoes please. Casual like something like this for dad’s.

This expecting Mom had some shoes she wanted shown off, so we had them peeking out of her dress. Also easy to hid feet as my dresses are all long.

Shoes for You - for studio session

for mom: no need for shoes, the dresses are long enough that we will hid your feet with the gown. However if you have some heels that you love and want to show off, feel free to bring them, just make sure they are clean for the studio.

For partner and siblings: no shoes needed, I can cover dad’s feet with mom’s long dress often. If mom is using heels, bring some dress shoes to match. Little ones I like the look of bare feet.

With these simple tips, you’ll be set to enjoy a relaxed and elegant maternity session. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want personalized advice!
