When should a newborn session take place?

Typically newborns are photographed under two weeks old for the below reasons.

I photograph babies in the Redmond studio, located in the east bay of Seattle. It’s all set up for you, nothing to do just arrive with baby and extra milk.

Why 5-12 days old:

  • baby's have the relaxant hormone after birth. This is so they are able to travel down the birth canal. So in the first two weeks they are easier to pose.

  • baby's sleep much more in the first two weeks, and wake up and are fussier making sessions harder after 2 weeks.

  • Often around 9-12 days baby ‘wake up’ to the world and get far fussier and opinionated about what they want to do and not.

  • baby acne doesn't come until after 10 days old.

  • If a baby is going to get colic, that also doesn't typically happen until about 2-3 weeks old.

  • they will only BE as tiny as when they were born in the first two weeks. At 2 weeks old we want to see them back up to their birth weight.

It does not mean we are forgoing awake photos. Many clients love both awake and asleep newborn photos. Because my sessions are longer, about 3 hours, there typically is a small portion baby will be awake in the session. Sessions are long in order to pose babies, and take the time to sooth and feed little ones on demand.

Julia Christina photography serves the greater Seattle area and her studio is located in Redmond.
